an der südküste korsikas thront hoch und erhaben auf weissen kreidefelsen, ausgesetzt über dem meer gelegen, der friedhof der stadt bonifacio.
friedhof wäre jedoch missverständlich. eine kleine, grossartig, würdevolle ‚stadt der toten’ wurde hier geschaffen als ansammlung kleiner mausoleen, welche gassen, strassen und plätze definieren. die kleinen, monumentalen häuser sind einzelnen familien gewidmet und bilden den zentralen ort deren gedenkens. Sie sind zeugen von status und identität. einzeln betrachtet sind sie orte der permanenz, des weiterlebens mit den gegangenen, als wolle man die möglichkeit schaffen, am leben im jenseits teilzunehmen, die sippe besuchen zu können und sich jederzeit in gewohnt urbaner umgebung nahe zu sein.
es soll schon vorgekommen sein, dass der ein oder andere ortsunkundige am abend die kleinen gassen erkundete mit dem ziel, in den anmutigen gebäuden eine bleibe für die nacht zu finden – ein vorhaben, welches nach der erkenntnis der funktion der häuser, jeweils auf unbestimmte zeit vertagt wurde.

on the south coast of corsica, perched high atop white chalk cliffs, suspended above the sea, lies the cemetery of the city of bonifacio.
cemetery is misleading. a small, magnificent and venerable city of the dead was created here as a collection of small mausoleums, which structure lanes, streets and squares. the diminutive yet monumental structures are dedicated to individual families and constitute the central place of their remembrance. they are witnesses to status and identity. individually, they are places of permanence, of living with those who have gone, granting the living the opportunity to participate in the life beyond, to visit the clan and to remain close-knit in the unique urban setting.
visitors to the area have sometimes explored the small alleyways in the evening in the hopes of spending the night in one of the graceful buildings – an endeavor which, once aware of the function of the structures, is indefinitely delayed.
