der palast el badi, erbaut vom sultan ahmed el mansour zwischen 1578 und 1608, war einst die grösste und prunkvollste palastanlage marokkos. kunstvolle mosaike, geschnitzte verzierungen, handbemalte kacheln wurden nach 100 jahren abgetragen und für den bau eines palastes in meknes verwendet.

fast glücklich scheint dieser umstand. so zeigt sich die anlage heute mit monumentaler kraft: reine struktur und ordnung, monochrom. imposante monolithisch gestampfte lehmmauern bilden die erdige skulptur. inmitten der geschäftigen medina dringt kein laut durch die massiven wände. ein kraftvoller ort der stille, welchem die nistenden storchenpaare noch einen hauch von mystik verleihen.

the palace of el badi, built by the sultan ahmed el mansour between 1578 and 1608, was once the largest and most magnificent palace complex in morocco. ornate mosaics, carved decorations and hand-painted tiles were removed after 100 years and used for the construction of a palace in meknes.

this circumstance now seems almost fortunate. the complex radiates monumental strength: pure structure and order, monochrome. imposing monolithic, mounded clay walls form the earthy sculpture. in the midst of the busy medina no sound penetrates the massive walls. a formidable place of silence, to which the nesting stork couples lend a touch of mysticism.
